Looking at a typical amortization schedule we see that
initially most of your payment goes towards paying interest
and very little goes towards bringing down your actual
principal or balance on our loan. It would appear as if
on a 30-year loan, the amounts would begin to even out
around the 15th year and you would be paying equally on

So, after 20 years, we still owe half of
what we borrowed on our initial 30-year loan. This is
because the interest is being calculated on the remaining
balance of our loan. So, the higher the balance of the
loan, the more interest you pay.

There is no magical way to pay off your mortgage early
without paying more each month than you do currently.
